About The Secretariat
The Non-Profit Organizations Secretariat (NPO Secretariat) is a State agency established by the Non-Profit Organization Policy 2020 and the Non-Profit Organisation Directives 2020. It is responsible for the registration, regulating and empowering the non-profit organization sector in the country.
Mandate
The mandate of the Non-Profit Organization Secretariat is to establish an effective regulatory and coordinating mechanism that will facilitate durable partnership with the non-profit community taking into consideration best practices.
Vision
A competent, functioning and sustainable Non-Profit Sector.
Mission
To efficiently and effectively regulate and support the Non-Profit Sector to enhance its contributions to national development.
Functions
The NPO Secretariat shall:
- License institutions to operate as Non-Profit Organizations
- Maintain and publish a list of NPOs in good standing in the country.
- Establish standards,Directives and codes of practice in collaboration with the NPO sector.
- Adopt a risk-based approach in monitoring and supervising NPOs identified to be vulnerable to money laundering or terrorist financing.
- Laise between Government and the NPO sector.
- Advise the sector Minister on matters of policy relating to the NPO sector, and
- Collaborate with relevant domestic and international Law Enforcement Agencies in investigations and the sharing of information.
